Preparing the installation site is one of the most important steps before your new hot tub is delivered. A properly prepared foundation, sufficient service access and a suitable electrical connection will ensure a smooth installation, reliable operation and easy maintenance for years to come.
As a hot tub manufacturer, we recommend giving site preparation the same attention as choosing the right model.
Choose a Stable and Level Foundation
A hot tub should always be installed on a solid, level surface capable of supporting its full operating weight.
Once filled with water and occupied, the load can reach approximately 630 kg/m² (130 lb/ft²), depending on the model. The foundation should therefore be designed with an appropriate safety margin.
Suitable foundations include:
- Reinforced concrete slab
- Properly installed paving
- Compacted gravel base with paving slabs
- Structurally designed wooden or composite deck
For concrete foundations, a slab thickness of at least 100 mm (4 inches) is generally recommended, unless local structural requirements specify otherwise.
Installing a Hot Tub on a Deck or Balcony
If the hot tub will be installed on a balcony, rooftop terrace or elevated deck, the load-bearing capacity of the structure must always be verified.
Large hot tubs may exceed 3,300 kg (7,300 lb) when filled with water and occupied. A qualified structural engineer should confirm that the installation area is suitable.
Allow Space for Future Service
Although modern hot tubs require minimal maintenance, pumps, filtration systems and electrical components must remain accessible for servicing.
For this reason, sufficient access around the cabinet panels should always be maintained according to the manufacturer’s installation requirements.
Proper service access can significantly reduce maintenance time throughout the lifetime of the spa.
Installing a Sunken Hot Tub
A partially or fully recessed installation creates a clean architectural appearance but requires careful planning.
We recommend:
- Maintaining a service corridor of at least 60 cm (24 inches) around the hot tub
- Providing effective drainage
- Ensuring adequate ventilation of the installation pit
These requirements should ideally be considered during the design stage of the project.
Electrical Connection
Most premium hot tubs are designed for a 400 V three-phase electrical connection, although some models are also available in 230 V versions.
Always follow the technical documentation provided with your specific model and have the electrical installation completed by a qualified electrician in accordance with local regulations.
Water Supply and Drainage
Most hot tubs do not require a permanent water supply or drain connection.
The spa can typically be filled using a standard garden hose and emptied through the integrated drain valve or with a submersible pump.
With proper water treatment and regular maintenance, the same water can usually remain in the spa for several months.
Use a Quality Thermal Cover
A well-insulated thermal cover helps reduce heat loss, keeps debris out of the water and lowers operating costs.
If the hot tub is installed under a pergola, roof or indoors, make sure there is sufficient overhead clearance for comfortable cover operation. In most cases, a minimum height of 230 cm (7.5 ft) is recommended.
Check the Delivery Route
Before delivery, verify that the access route to the installation site is clear.
Remove obstacles such as fences, tree branches or narrow gates that could prevent safe transportation. Most hot tubs require an access width of approximately 100 cm (40 inches), although this may vary depending on the model.
When a Crane May Be Required
Some installations—such as rooftop terraces, enclosed courtyards or elevated gardens—may require a crane.
If crane lifting is expected, the installation conditions should be evaluated well before delivery to ensure safe and efficient handling.
