Crystal-clear water is about more than appearance. In a hot tub, where the water is typically heated to 36–39 °C (97–102 °F), warm temperatures create ideal conditions for bacteria and other microorganisms to multiply. Proper water care is therefore essential not only for comfort but also for hygiene, reliable operation and the long-term lifespan of your hot tub.
The good news is that maintaining healthy water is straightforward. By following a few simple principles, you can keep your water clean, safe and enjoyable for many weeks.
Start with Proper Water Preparation
Good water quality begins as soon as you fill the hot tub. Whenever possible, use a pre-filter on the water supply to reduce mechanical impurities, iron and excess minerals. This makes water balancing easier and reduces the workload on the filtration system.
After filling the hot tub, check the basic water parameters in the following order:
- Water hardness
- pH level
- Sanitiser level
Correctly balanced water creates a stable environment for long-term operation.
Don’t Overlook Water Hardness
Many hot tub owners focus only on pH and sanitiser levels, but water hardness has a significant impact on the lifespan of the entire system.
Hard water encourages limescale deposits on heaters, jets and the acrylic shell. Extremely soft water, on the other hand, can become corrosive and may affect metal components over time. Each time you refill the hot tub, check the water hardness and adjust it if necessary using an appropriate water hardness stabiliser.
Maintaining the Correct pH
Even the best sanitiser cannot work effectively if the pH is out of balance.
The recommended pH range for a hot tub is between 7.2 and 7.6. Within this range, the water is comfortable for bathers while allowing sanitisers to perform at their highest efficiency.
Check the pH at least once or twice a week and adjust it when necessary using pH increaser or pH reducer products.
Chlorine or Oxygen-Based Sanitiser?
Both sanitation methods can provide safe and hygienic water when used correctly.
Chlorine-based sanitisers remain the most widely used solution, offering excellent protection against bacteria, viruses and algae.
Oxygen-based sanitisers are a chlorine-free alternative preferred by users with sensitive skin or those who wish to avoid the typical chlorine smell. They generally require more frequent monitoring and careful dosing.
Whichever system you choose, avoid combining chlorine and oxygen-based products unless specifically recommended.
Filtration Does Most of the Work
The filtration system continuously removes fine particles, body oils, cosmetics and other contaminants from the water. To maintain its performance, the filter cartridge should be cleaned regularly.
As a general guideline:
- Rinse the filter weekly.
- Deep clean the filter approximately once a month.
- Replace the filter cartridge according to its condition and usage.
For heavily used hot tubs or semi-commercial installations, an optional external sand filtration system connected through a bypass can provide increased filtration capacity and reduce maintenance requirements.
Good Habits Make a Difference
Water quality depends not only on water treatment products but also on user habits.
Taking a quick shower before entering the hot tub helps remove cosmetics, body lotions, sunscreen and other contaminants that increase the demand on both the filtration system and the sanitiser.
These simple habits can significantly improve water quality and reduce maintenance.
A Few Minutes Each Week Is Enough
A weekly maintenance routine should include:
- Checking the pH level
- Testing the sanitiser level
- Rinsing the filter cartridge
- Adjusting water treatment products if needed
- Using a water clarifier if the water becomes cloudy
Just a few minutes of regular maintenance helps extend the life of both the water and your hot tub equipment while preventing more costly problems.
Clean Water Means Worry-Free Relaxation
Hot tub water care does not have to be complicated. A combination of efficient filtration, balanced water chemistry, the right sanitiser and good hygiene habits will keep your hot tub ready to enjoy throughout the year.
Regular maintenance takes only a few minutes each week but helps ensure clean, safe water and reliable performance for years to come.
